I was wondering if I would need to rebuild my 12a 84 1st gen, it has about 168,000mi on it and i got it when it was around 120mi. Im reletivly inexperienced but im keen on doing this myself (if i need it). When would i need to rebuild it?

When the compression is so low that the engine runs like a bag of hammers. Factory specs says that compression at 250RPMs should be at the least, 85psi on both rotors.

yeah the compression readings should be around 80-90 for each chamber. If 2 of the readings are lower than the third, then you have a bad apex seal. If all 3 readings are low, then its prolly a bad side seal.

Hang on, so if it's still running fine and not drinking the coolant and/or oil, then it's still fine?

It's just that I'm doing some work on my 12A (123K miles) and I was going to rebuild it cos i thought it wouldn't give much power after a few more k's driving.

WOOHOO!! more money to spend on tuning!!

low compression, rough idle, loss of power.
