I am trying to help my buddy figure our what this engine is that he recently picked up form a guy that apparently didn't know much about it either. Looks like a fresh rebuild and possible performance upgrades. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
S4 NA Irons with an S4 T2 front cover. if the rotor housings don't have the knock sensor bung/threads they probably are the S4 NA housings. its been tapped for turbo oil.

I believe Hayes up in Washington used to do their rebuilds/irons in red. I've got parts from an engine they built that were the same shade though they're from 10+ years ago.
