I know there is a computer for the transmission. Its in the passenger side kick panel. The auto trannys in the 89-91 cars had a lot of electronic solenoids and stuff inside the tranny itself. The 86-88 cars had trannys that were more mechanical. I'm not as familiar with electronic trannys so I'm not going to give you mis-information. Download the factory service manual at www.iluvmyrx7.com and it should give you info on how to troubleshoot your problem.
