Transmission Removal

Well, I'm trying to get my tranny out (88T2 see below), pretty much have everything unbolted and disconnected. I can get the tranny to slide back about 1/2", then I hit the edge of the hole where the shift lever goes through.

So I searched here, found a post that suggested loosening the motor mounts a bit, allowing the whole assembly to tilt. Great!, I got almost to 1", but just could not get them separated. The engine is in the car, and it's on stands, so I have about 15" to work with underneath. I do have the FSM, and double, and triple checked, everything is disconnected. Even with a rented tranny jack, just couldn't do it.

As I was gently wrestling it, there was a sound that I'd describe as rubber on metal maybe, but I couldn't tell where exactly the sound was coming from-- I have to believe all that's left is sliding the tranny off the input shaft, but the heck if I can do it myself.

Anyone have any suggestions on what the holdup might be?

Thanks,

Greg O.

I find that the transmissions come out (and go in much easier) if you put a small jack (the spare tire jack will do in a pinch) with a small piece of wood under the front edge of the oil pan and apply a little force there to tilt the engine. This helps clear the shifter area. Be careful not to mess up your oil pan; be careful!

Thanks Brian.

I did get clear of the shifter area-- really thought that was going to be the hard part until I tilted the motor as well, but I could only get about 1" of separation.

I'm assuming that once I clear that one stud at the top of the bell housing that I'm clear of the input shaft as well (ie. probably why they did that).
