Trailing timing marks?

I have run across this on more than one 2nd gen FI rotary. The FSM says to check the ignition timing at idle, all electrics off, engine warmed up. So once that's all done I connect the timing light to the L1 (leading rotor 1) plug wire, then check the timing and I see the pointer aligned with the L1 mark (stock is 5 deg ATDC). Then I connect the light to T1 (trailing rotor 1) plug wire, the FSM says I should see the second (15 deg ATDC) mark.

Nope. I see the L1 mark.

Can't adjust the pickups like the earlier dizzy type cars, jumping the wiring harness test terminals does no good. The marks move when the engine speeds up, so I am getting advance. But it shows the exact same timing on both leading and trailing whether the engine is idling or revving, i.e. both plugs fire at the same time.

WTF is up with that? Am I missing the obvious?
