Time To Smog Check, Need Advise
I have to smog my FC next month, hurdle number one I swapped out the 6 port for a 13B T. Hurdle number two I have an aftermarket 2 1/2" down pipe and no cats. I still have all of the engine emissions parts in place minus the cats.
I am planning on keeping the aftermarket down pipe in place, I am only planning to buy a cat in order to smog. Is there a specific non Mazda cat I should buy? I have been looking at Magnaflow units and Catco units.

You will automatically fail visual inspection. Without the pre-cat and main cat present, you will fail. If you decide to install an aftermarket cat, you need to make sure its OBD-2 cat with the serial number facing down. Even though your car is not OBD2, the new California smog law states you need to have "OBD2" when replacing with aftermarket. The easiest thing to do is install the pre-cat and main cat.

Thanks for the info.
I can shoot myself in the foot, because a stock pre cat came with the motor. I gave it away, because I was told that the stock down pipe would not fit (clear) the front crossmember.
One step forward and two steps back ha ha.

I'm waiting on getting an 87 NA precat to put on my 90 S5. I was planning on just getting a magnalow direct-fit main cat from Kragen to go with it. Somewhat on a budget, but if need be, I'll just a new pre-cat. I just dunno where, if not a local muffler shop.

Is the magnaflow direct-fit an aftermarket or a stock replacement? If not Im probably gonna go with a universal main cat. Previous owner had a staright pipe on it when I bought the FC. I assumed at the time that it was an exhaust leak. Obviously I failed smog with it.
I regret throwing away my stock S4 complete stock system.
