Ok so I bought 20 ft of aeroquip 6 AN steel braided fuel line and the fittings that go on the ends of the hoses. The problem is, I know my sizes are right, but it is next to impossible to get the steel hose into the sleaves of the hose ends, so I dont know what to do. Anyone ever dealt with this stuff or have this problem?

 

Here's what you do... wrap electrical tape tightly around the place where you need to cut the hose, now cut it down the center of the tape, this keeps the ends from fraying.. once it's cut remove the electrical tape from the end and spray a shot of WD-40 in to the end of the hose and a little on to the fitting, now place the end of the hose in to the end of the fitting and push hard while twisting, it should start... Keep pushing and twisting until it is as far in to the fitting as it can go, now back it off just enough that you can just start the threads the other half of the fitting... Take 2 wrenches and screw the fitting together..

You might also try to use masking tape instead of electrical tape. I've had better success (making cleaner cuts - so the steel braid does not fraye to much). If you have access to a chop saw of some type, it makes cutting the hose so much simpler and cleaner. Laters - Tommy

 

thanks for the replies guys... I guess I will try wd40 because the reall problem is just getting the steel braiding and hose to fit into the sleaves... I tried with all my might and wasnt even close, so we'll see I guess.

What part are you actually having trouble with? Putting the steel braided hose into the outer sleeve or connecting the two sleeves together? If you are having issues with the putting the hose into the outer sleeve you might want to clamp the outer sleeve to something so it is held tightly in place. Afterward make sure the steel braided hose end is not frayed because it makes it really difficult to put in if it is. Try to go at it at an angle with a twisting motion. I'm not sure if this is making any sense. You might try the aeroquip site. If I remember correctly they have instructions with tolerances on how deep the hose should be in the outer sleeve and other tolerances. The box the lines came in should also have instructions. Good luck and becareful of the frayed steel braid - they hurt like heck when they poke you -- Tommy
