Starter wiring on an 85 12a?

I hope this is an easy question for someone...

The starter on my 12a stopped working. The solenoid is working (nice solid clunk as it throws the gear) but the motor itself isn't getting power. (The motor itself is fine--we had it tested and even tried a new motor--same symptoms.)

Is there a relay somewhere I can check? The haynes manual points to a spot behind the left headlight but there's nothing there that looks anything like it.

My other question is...can someone please tell me what each of the wires do? I think:
--Motor is grounded to the engine
--Fat wire from the battery is positive lead
--The wire to the spade terminal is for the solenoid.
--The blue/white wire to the other ring terminal is what? Is it necessary?

I'm at a loss troubleshooting this one and just retarded reading wiring diagrams. I appreciate any help you guys can offer!

Thanks,
Dylan

not sure what those other wires r for so no help there, all i have is the single wire for the solenoid. i would guess there may be a problem with the solenoid since the wire for the actual starter motor attaches to the solenoid and gets it's power when it's engaged. when u said u tried a new motor, does that mean u swapped onto it ur solenoid? also check and make sure the connection at the bat(both + and -) have clean tight connections. and since u didn't mention the ground wire off the bat, yes the starter grounds itself by it's physical mounting but it still needs the ground wire from the bat to a tranny to engine mounting bolt.
