spits and sputters, your ideas please!

87 GXL, 142K, 30K on rebuild.

As the temp gauge starts to rise furing the warm-up cycle, the fuel system will jump in and out of a severe "rich" mode.

During the rich condition, the engine will roll the black smoke, misfire severly and jump in and out of this condition rapidly, as in once per second.

Once the temp gauge reaches the normal operating range, the condion starts to subside, and after about 5 mi. this problem will disipate completely.

When this first became noticable it was not near this bad, but in a month's time it has progressively gotten to this point.

I would suspect a problem with the ECT, or mass airflow deal, or something that maybe the system going "closed loop" cancels out.

But before I go diggin, I thougt I would offer this up for comment, as it may be something that somebody has already dealt with.

Your ideas, please!

Thanks,

Rootsgroup

I don't know dude. I fould start trouble shooting stuff like the egr valve and all that other emission control ****. You can download the factory service manual at www.fc3s.org and it has all the procedures in it. It could be any of the sensors or emissions solenoids. Good luck finding it.
