Some problems, and questions
Ok so I have an 87 SE NA. I recently bought a T2 engine and tranny. So first the problems.
The engine "looks" to be in ok condition except for some minor problems
There's an extra engine oil dipstick that came with it, one is already installed. Kinda odd to me
The turbo has a slight bit of play when moving it up and down. No side to side or in and out play. A Neighbor told me up and down could possibly be problematic.
The wiring harness appears to be there, but a bundle of wires is cut at the ends and taped together.
The apex seals are known to be bad
Now the questions
I would like to rebuild the engine, but I'm on a budget. Would it be better to save up and have someone else do it(rotary shop, about 4 hours away) or buy the kit and do it myself. I do have mechanical background, just not with rotary engines.
After researching my options on the forums and other websites I've seen 3 ways to do this conversion.
1. Full engine/drivetrain conversion.
2. Drop the rebuilt engine in, change out the clutch and flywheel to that of a turbo II on the current NA drivetrain and leave the rear end alone.
3. Pull the turbo from the spare engine, and get custom fabricated parts to bolt up, along with replacing the ECU and other components.
I'd like to go with the most cost effeciant means. From what I've seen option 2 seems to be the most cost effeciant, but I've only seen one person who has actually mentioned it. So what I'm looking for is an opinion from some more rotary savvy people to give me a good insight on how to go about this conversion.
I have pics of the engine up in my albums. Haven't been able to determine the year of it though. I can post more pics if it would offer some insight as to specifics on this project to come.
Like I said, I'm hoping to do this as cost effeciant as possible, but not ruin my car. So any insight to this would be helpful.
