Did you just buy the car? What color is the smoke? How many miles are on the car? If its blue smoke, its ok. Its normal for the rotary to have some smoke on start up. If its a high mileage motor with blue smoke then it could be a little bit of oil getting past the oil seal. No biggie, but you can't fix it without rebuilding the motor. If its thick white smoke, its coolant, which means you have a broken coolant seal. This can't be fixed without removing and rebuilding the engine. You don't want to drive the vehicle like this. It could cause more damage to the internal engine components because coolant is corrosive to bearing surfaces and other steel parts like the apex seals.
