Try gently reving the engine to about 2k while slipping it into first. And I don't know about the spring thing...

With the shift lever not springing back to the center/left side position (I presume your talking side to side) IIRC there is a spring just inside the transmission after you take off the shift lever that helps center the shift lever. The ball on the shift lever actualy fits through part of the spring. You will be able to see the spring from the top with the shift lever taken off & out of the way. You may see part of the spring hanging on the round ball part of the shift lever. BUT, With a broken spring you may not see the spring. Taking the shift lever off & puting it back on properly IS A BITCH. The only method to change the spring IIRC is with the transmission take out of the car.

If your issue with shifting into first gear is during the process of geting the car moving forward from a dead stop I would say that your first gear syncro is not good. Presuming the motor is at approx 800 rpm's. If your having an issue down shifting to first STOP doing that down shift.

Hope this helps

IIRC means "If I remember correctly".

With the transmission have a knowledgeable mechanic (even if it costs ya a buck or two) take the car for a ride & get their thoughts. With the syncro you can change just the syncro. But there may be more that needs help once the transmission is apart. If someone confirms that it's the syncro it would be cheaper to roll the dice & get a junkyard transmission for say $100/$150. Fixing a transmission can get speendy $$$. Then at your leasure you could take the transmission apart & learn & fix & resell it to someone else. It may be just a learning process & sell the bad transmission as is.

As an example at the track one day I was shifting from 3rd to 4th at 8,000 rpm in the middle of a 180* turn & the friken shift lever stuck between 3rd & 4th. Of course my first thought is "that smucking transmission". Well when I took the transmission out & carefully took the transmission apart I found out it was the smucking driver that smucked up. The gear slider for 5th gear & reverse was stuck in the reverse position. The actual transmission was in netural but the DRIVER hit reverse gear while attempting to shift to 4th gear. : ( If you were to go to www.howstuffworks.com you could bring up a schematic of a 4 & or 5 speed transmission. It ain't the real thing but it's close enough for you to get a better idea of the innerards of a transmission.

Have Fun ; )
