screeching/whining noise

Hey guys

Before I begin - this is a 93 fd, but I don't think its 3rd gen specific -atleast the screeching from the drive belt.

Onto my problem. I tried swapping my air pump yesterday (different complication there), but after I put everything back together... I noticed a rather LARGE whining noise. I presume its was from the drive belt (since thats the one I was adjusting), but it sounded really bad. The car itself started fine, and seemed to idle ok, but the sound got rather LOUD, and I had to shut the car down. The first couple of seconds when I first started the engine up, there was no sound... but the 2nd time... the sound started right away. I rechecked the belt to make sure it was seated correctly, and as far as I could tell, everything seemed fine. Could it be that the belt is too tight or loose? could that cause the belt to whine like that? I didn't have the car running for more than a few secnods as the whining was almost unbearable.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

did you get any kind of fluid on the belt? Take some spray lubricant or spray cleaner like carb or brake cleaner and spray the belt while the engine is running. It will probably go away.

thanks Stinkfist.

Is it ok to spray a cleaner on the belt? I think I did get some liquid on it... but the screeching was still there the next morning... when I presume everything was dry.... I rechecked to make sure all the teeth on the belt was lined up again... and appears to be.....

thanks

Perfectly ok to spray the belts with cleaner. I do it all the time in the shop I work at.

Some liquids will leave a residue even after they dry. If you spilled something on the belt go ahead and clean it like I explained above. I'm sure thats the problem from the way you described it.

Good luck,
Mike
