Rotary Rookie Engine Help NEEDED

Hey. So I have a 1985 Mazda RX-7. Im prepping it for some track time, and have rebuilt the 12a. The engine is all back in the car now, but while it was out, I took the liberty of doing some carb/emissions stripping. I followed this site.

http://foxed.ca/rx-7/Carb%20Stripping%20Draft%201.pdf

So now, the car wont run right. It had trouble starting (I think that's a starter motor issue), but we bump started the car a few times. It ran, but it sounded really loud, and wouldn't hold an idle. Seemed like just wasn't getting any/ enough fuel or air.

If any of you have suggestions/need more info, please let me know. I'd like to get the car running (obviously).

And it is getting spark. And the fuel pump works. So my intuition from working on cars (but never rotaries) says its either fuel or air thats the issue. Maybe a carb or just a vacuum related issue.

Thanks!

when you rebuild a rotary... guessing that you rebuilt to proper tolerances on everything... when you first start them they can be extremely hard to start. They are very prone to flooding since the apex seals and side seals aren't seated properly yet. It's been a few years since I've had a 12A... I'm a little rusty, but the carb can be extremely fickle, I didn't read the article you have linked, but the carb might need a good cleaning sounds like you might have dirt under a needle or something like that. Check to make sure you do not have a vacuum leak, that will make it run like crap. As far as being loud, if you removed emissions, assuming you took out the cat if it had one or whatever, yes it will be extremely loud. I have a GSL-SE with more or less straight exhaust, it has a glass pack... and it is very loud. I'm also drawing a blank on the name of the valve that helps control idle and vacuum i think when you let off the gas... and if this is bad I'm thinking it can also mess with your idle too... just remember it...
Shutter valve... here's the link... 81-85 12A Shutter Valve anyhow... hope this helps.
