problems with idle

i just bought my first RX-7 a couple of days ago (cheap) and it's acting up already. After it warms up, it will idle strangely. It will go from 500 rpm to 1,000 rpm like every second...just back and forth. And if I dare turn the car off and try to start it back it'll act like it wants to start but won't. Plus, it smells like it's flooded. I had planned on giving it a good tune up this weekend and I need to know if I need to buy something major for it to get the idle to calm down.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Get the 88 FSM on www.fc3s.org under manuals.
Get the chapter about "fuel and emissions systems", that s all you need for now.

Assuming the plugs and wires are ok,
try to set the idle and adjust the tps (note everytime you adjust idle you have to adjust tps)

If you idle is jumping, it could be due to many reasons:

1) vaccum leak
2) misadjusted or bad tps (will give you hesitation also)
3) poor compression
4) (big) exhaust leaks
5) other things I can't think of right now

I would check compression first since if it's no good,
no point going further.
If good, check for vaccum leaks. If ok, check TPS.
