Exclamation ping problem

ok here is what is going on maby someone can help me. i read an arcive yesterday on flushing the motor. so i tried it. water down the carb like sugested for a first gen. this is supposed to steam correct? i got no visable steam from the exaust. also there was a bolt in one of the vacume ports in the stock airfilter. the same time i tried to flush the motor i removed the bolt to see what would happen. with the bolt out there is a ping coming from the pipe between the cat and muffler. but a sugnifigant gain in power. when i put the bolt back in i lose the power increase but the pig goes away except when i clutch to shift. then it sounds like the ping is coming from the exaust manifold and louder. what can i do to correct this ping problem without having the bolt in vacume port. or did i do some sort of damage by trying to flush the motor. where i live we have no emissions so i dont care what i have to do to releave this problem.
