Oil with high zinc content
 
First off, I want to state that this is NOT a "Which oil do I use lol" or "Synthetics are bad?!" thread. I've already determined that I'm going to use synthetic Amsoil 20W-50 on my blocked-OMP engine and premixing Klotz Techniplate R-50.

My question is this: after searching the forums, I couldn't really find any straight answer about The positive/negative of zinc content in the oil. I'm looking at 2 Amsoil 20W-50 oils, a regular one and one labeled "Z-Rod". The Z-Rod is described as "containing a high-zinc formulation that prevents wear on critical engine components and a blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors for added protection during long-term storage."

Does a high-zinc formulation have any adverse effects on the components of the rotary, or negatively affect the way it performs?

My last oil change i switched to brad penn 15w-40. The added zinc helps greatly with lubricity especially when oil pressure drops in your system like when in a sustained high g corner. All the racing oil we use at our shop has a large concentration of zinc for this very purpose. The only downside that i have heard of is reduced catalyst life . . .

Supposedly the only drawback of high zinc content is if the engine burns oil then it will reduce catalytic converter life. That is the only negative I have read.

Great read, thank you! I don't run a catalytic converter, so that won't be a problem. Looks like I'll go ahead and purchase the Z-Rod one.

The Development of Lubricating Oils for Rotary Racing Engines

Shouldn't be using high ZDDP oil to mask issues with your oiling setup. Idemitsu determined that ZDDP is detrimental to high load operation in rotary engines for reasons listed in the above article.

A good race oil is not going to be bad for your rotary. 98% of the off the shelf conventional oils out there are designed for emissions and there is alot of lubricating properties that they have reduced and completely taken out of current conventional oils.

I used BP but now im going to run E....Dunno what to use now.

Their is others out there that are good like BP but safe for E fuel. Just search synthetic race fuels.

Theres tons of stuff on the market, no doubt. Im just sided to the "green stuff". I know few "ins and outs" about it that i would probably never find out about any others. My opinion, nothing else. The combatibilty issue just sucks.

Ohh gotcha ah hahahahaha. Man you pay attention well lol.
Yea I only have one station in town for E85 so ive been debating on it. Also i have only been running the BP oil this last year with good luck. I hear pro's and cons on every oil out there anymore. But if i do go E fuel I will for sure have to ditch the BP.
ANyone know any other good oils like Bp that is more compatible?

People around here aren't exactly sharp or willing to do some research on their own. I have seen this and several other papers regarding development of lubricants for rotary engines which goes against most of the BS on the internet but most people will just stick with "forum knowledge" which is for some weird reason stored in FAQ section:lol:

Your reading a statement made by one company. I guess since one company says so it must be right. Weather is a f1 engine or rotary engine the same lubricating principles apply when trying to lubricate and fight wear.
