O2 sensor replace?

I've not had my rx very long. She's old, and needs a tune up (it's obvious, 13 mpg? I can do better than that!). It's an '88 GXL. HEre bes my question: Do I have to take off the whole exhaust manifold just to replace the O2 sensor? What do I have to do to replace this sucker? Any help would be appreciated.

You need a slotted socket that you can get at any auto parts store. No, you don't have to remove the manifold. It's just bolt off bolt on. The problem is going to come in trying to get the old one off. Have some WD40 or penetrating oil handy. They get frozen on pretty tightly. I used a long breaker bar on mine and still had to exert some significant elbow grease.. Put a coat of anti sieze on the threads of the new one.

Wow! That was soooo easy with the slotted socket. I got the car warmed up first and used a torque wrench for removal. (that made the removal easy, my cousin told me to warm the car up first, and it really does work.) Anyways, I got the old one out and the new one in and it’s running great. I was kinda wierded out because the old one said “NGK Japan” on it… It seems as if it’s probably never been replaced. (or at least it’s been a long time) Well, thanks alot Chuck.
