No power sudden loud exhaust

After giving it some gas merging onto the highway I lost power to the point that the car can not hold an idle. The exhaust also became much louder almost sounding like it's straight piped. It's 10pm right now and after getting the car into the garage in limp mode I'm just looking for suggestions on where to start tomorrow? Also the car won't start unless you tap the pedal almost like when it's flooded.

I'd probably check the spark plugs and wires first. It almost sounds to me like a spark plug came loose.

After that check out the intake hoses and if possible, the exhaust.

what year/generation car?

i tend to agree with above. you may have lost ignition, misfired and maybe blown a muffler on top of it.

If no spark, it'd sound like a machine gun going off with throttle opening

I don't get how the car would get louder with compression loss in 2/6 it'd sound different as all the other described symptoms suggest blown engine.

Best of luck.
May the housing and rotors be salvageable.

Judging by location, it's going to be an FD - not holding an idle is worrisome, although if it starts and runs on 2 rotors, maybe I'm being unduly pessimistic.

Exhaust noise, maybe a different note? If it isn't blown, I'd look at, turbo to manifold, turbo to downpipe or downpipe to midpipe gaskets as you're neartly sitting over all them. We once did lose power and have a weird exhaust note when the wastegate flapper failed, but the car did run normally otherwise.

Edit: See in past posts, a 96 with mods and possibly stock ecu, hmmm......
