Talking My Engine tear down.....Opinions Please

Hi all,

I just tore down the engine on my FD, first rotary tear down and rebuild so i would appreciate some opinions on the condition of my parts! Upon teardown the rear rotor had 120 PSI so i assumed good condition, front rotor, only hit 40 psi so thats where i was expecting to see something bad.

First off, the middle iron, and front rotor side

super smooth surface all over, cant feel any step wear....wait a minute...

That doesnt look to healthy, maybe the reason for the drastic loss of compresion. Rear rotor side of the middle iron also has no step wear that i can feel to the touch.

now the front iron, lets see it.

Dont think it looks too bad, cant really feel any where, except on the combustion side of the plate. Picture time.

can feel it with my finger there, but the depth micrometer measured only .002 which is acceptable says mazda, dont know if my micrometer is off but it seems pretty significant to me.

Rear iron seems pretty good, a little bit of wear in the same spot as front plate, but overall good.

and now the rotor housing. I will just put 2 pictures up of what i think might be suspect problems, based off my research, 2MM into the housing is acceptable, but i want some opinions.

Rear housing

Front housing

I dont know about those chrome flaking off spots, kinda fishy, but thats all of the flakeyness, general housing wear looks.....well, i dont know what good and bad looks like so feel free to tell me some stuff.

i took all the pictures and have forgotten whether they were front or rear, so im just going to number them, and if you have comments, comment that number picture,

it's difficult to tell with the pictures sometimes but everything short of the broken coolant seal wall iron looks fine. some people would opt for newer/better rotor housings but those don't look too bad and the flaking is in non critical areas.

so the center iron needs to be repaired or replaced.

the flaking was my main concern, wasnt sure if that much is ok or not, thanks for the info, think i am ending up with all 3 irons instead of just center

with the exception of intermediate's compromised water jacket, the engine looks pretty good based on the photos. obviously i can't say that definitively, but from what i see and from what you said, they look good. i think the front and rear side housings are reusable, but if you do decide not to, please let me know.

i'm very curious to see what you found with the side and corner seals and springs.

just measured all apex seals, every one was right around 6.8 mm tall, .0025" clearance in the apex seal grooves, oil control rings all within specs, side seals and corners look great, with the exception of the center iron, everything is definitely reusable, obviously not going to, but had the water jackets not given im confident it would still be a 120PSI engine

I did just buy all 3 irons because i found a good deal, so as soon as the mods approve my thread over in 3rd gen for sale section the front and rears will be added to my list of stuff im not using anymore. ill put the center up to, sure someone can repair it somehow, cant feel any wear with my finger at all on the center. The front and rear i can feel it, depth micrometer gave me a .002~ step on the combustion side where the pics show.

If anyone wants them head over there, or PM me
