must the radiator flow vertical?

i was looking a doing a custom v-mount intercooler and saw pics of how RE was modding exsting aftermarket radiators. with his set up the collent must flow down then up which is no big deal but wouldnt it be easier to make a radiator that flows like a front mounted intercooler with the end tanks on the side?
