mallory fuel pump failure

a little history, car is 85 gs with 13b and dell set up. Car was set up with mallory 4070m pump when i got and holly f\p reg plumbed with return. drove it six months and the puel pump died. took it apart and brushes and armature worn out, so I replaced it with the same pump and upgraded the wiring during install.

So yesterday on the way home from work the pump stopped. thought maybe I kicked the wire out of the fuse block, It has happened before. checked it and it was good. Waited a few minutes and the car started pump was running again. drove a few miles and it stalled again. Got under the car and thumped the pump once and it came back on. This pump is only 5 months old, it cant be worn out already. when it is running it is still quiet but surges every once in a while like low voltage. I do not have a dvm at home to check it today.

so has anyone else had problems with these pumps? I purchased it from Racing beat so I thought it would be a quality unit. I have added a chassis ground as well as wiring harness ground, running 12 gauge wire from the fuse panel to the pump that has a seperate fuse of 5 amp rating. any ideas what would cause premature pump failure?

I use the mallory pump and have had three failurs in fifeteen years. All three were brushes. Mallory sells (or at least used to sell) the brushes for about $9.00.

I've run mine for quite a while too Joe and have had no issues yet.

But then again, I am not reducing pressure to 3.5 either.

going to get rid of the check valve in the return line today and was told by mallory NOT to put a filter before the pump. this could cause starvation problems. Moving the filter to the engine bay before the regulator, see how everything works out.
