Question Making an oil catch can

is there anything special to the internals of an oil catch can? i plan on having my Uncle TIG one together for me. i wanted it vented, have a return line so the thing does become full, and obviously have an inlet. Is that a good layout? is there any divisions inside of one? hopefully not, to make it easier to make.

Talking DIY Catch Can

You can use a air / water seperator for a air compressor (found at most big hardware stores in the air tool isle) most have a petcock already. remeber to remove the little filter that comes with it, replace it with a short section of tubing and stuff some stainless steel wool around it to act as a baffle. the filter can be a huge restriction and it can freeze in the winter if it gets wet wih condinsation.

If you want some tips on how to build a DIY Catch can, Look Below
Basically what you need is a container that has 2 inlets (one on each side) and a petcock drain in the bottom (to drain the oil out) One line feed from the oil filler neck to the catch can. The other line goes from the catch can to the UIM. Make sure you have a PCV valve in the line that goes to the UIM so the boost will not push back into the catch can.

Basiclly the catch can is acting as an oil air separator.

I recommend that you run a small tube inside the container that connects to the line coming from the Oil filler neck. The Idea behind this is to baffle the air and oil to prevent the oil mist from going directly into the line that goes to the UIM.

As another preventative measure you can use Stainless Steel wool to help baffle the air too (Stainless wont rust). Just tuck it in around the hose that was aforementioned.

Good Luck!
