little r/ l dial

hey i have a fc and i have noticed this little dial next to the afm mounted onto the strut tower... it has rich and lean settings i was wondering what this is for?

That's the el cheapo air fuel gauge. Used for rudimentary tuning. Not as pretty as a dash mounted gauge, but does the same thing.

It's called an idle mixture screw.
It only affects air/fuel ratio at idle speeds and is ignored above 1,200RPM.

hmmm ok sweet thanks guys..... will it be safe to adjust it? i think it idles a bit rich sometimes ... sometimes i can smell the fuel some mornings sometimes when it is warm it idles on 1000 then drops to bout 400 if i adjust that will it fix that .. if so will i haveta make it leaner or richer?

Mazda specs says to adjust the dial until you get highest idle RPM.
You just keep turning it - both directions - until your idle is at its highest.
