Lightened Fly Wheel Or Not
Lightened Fly Wheel Or Not
hey im pretty new to this site i got a 2 generation motor in a first generation body just mild work done bov ,frontmount ,turboport, microtech ,custom platium, 3 1/2inch dump pipe and exhaust with tip . yer wat my question was im setting up my gear box i got a series 4 turbo box with short shifter i was wondering wats the go a lightened fly wheel or a stock one and if i run a lightened flywheel would i have to run a counter balance .
For sporty driving the short throw shifter, a light flywheel, and a 6 puck clutch really work well togther.
Yes - the light flywheel bolts to a counter weight, just like an automatic's flex plate.
I love my ACT street light.

The lower the angular inertia/momentum of your rotating parts, the faster the acceleration and braking.
I remember reading of two BMW M3s that were for some racing class. One was last year's, one was the present year's. Present year one had a drastically lighter flywheel.
The driver said that the lighter-flywheel version had much snappier-feeling acceleration. But was almost impossible to start moving in from standing still. He said that the he finally settled on a way to get the low-flywheel-mass car moving. After starting the car, he floored the gas (the rev limiter prevented overrevving) and fed in the clutch.
The beauty of a rev limiter is that once you floor it, maximum power is available right up to the redline. Takes the guesswork out of launching light-flywheel cars.

Mine is a daily driver.
It's OK in Florida. Here it's mostly flat.
If your car is a daily driver in a hilly region, the light flywheel & 6-puck combination will be tricky.
