Just bought rx7! please help, engine smoking

hey everyone. i just officially switched from Vw to mazda, i picked up a 86 rx7 for $500. the body and motor have 151,000 miles, new clutch, and 60,000 on tranny, 5 speed. the kid thought a apex seal went bad.... i have no idea. i can get it to start, and at first it was smoking white really bad... then it turned a little blue, this smoke it really thick. but... after it ran for a little bit, i added two quarts of oil and a lot of water.... it seamed that the smoke went down... at least at a idle, i didnt rev it, i think it is low on gas because it died. does anyone have any idea of what the problem is? i am totally new to rotary, i was looking at doin a small block swap, but i think i want to stick with rotary because they seem really neat. please help me with any advice!!!
