Just bought a 87 GXl for 1500..

I hope I didn't get screwed. been reading the forum for last 3 weeks. the car runs great besides some little problems of being a 16year old car.

it has 156K on it cd player HID head lights and fogs added. it's all stock besides that.

is there anything BIG I should lookout for? things I know that are problems with the car:
1.gas guage only shows fuel for the first 1/4 tank then drops to E.
2. with headlights and cd player on the clock flashes.
3.kicks out really easy on 2month old tires (prob becuse never drove a rwd sports car)
4.sunroof does not close or open w/o the engine on/have to help it along to close it.
5. driver side window studders going down.
6. back shocks(struts?) need replaced soon.
7.e-brake line hanging down twist tie it to the frame
8.Some plastic broke and some dints.

other than that the oil pres is at 60-100 at all times (when should I add oil and where?!)

do you think I got a good deal? the guy had 4 of them sold this one becuse he had no need for it.

tell me what you think.

I just bought a 86 GXL for $1400 and it had a few things wrogn with it. I got the same window and sunroof problems, and I needed to replace the center plate in the engine. Right now the engine is sitting on my garage floor in pieces waiting for new parts to show up. The big thing you want to look for is compression. If you don't know when and where to add oil, I'm afraid that me trying to tell you how to do anything else is going to be a waste of my time. Checking and adding oil is the easiest thing next to using the key to unlock the door. The car does look good and I hope it works out for you. You should learn how a rotary engine works if you don't already know. As with all cars, it requires more maintenance then putting gas in the tank. The more you know how to do yourself, the less $$$ you will spend.

Yeah, looks good for $1500, good body/paint on it...
The other stuff (ie, moonroof needing help opening, etc..) happens to about 90% of all FC's...

Car looks great just check the oil using the dipstick about once or twice a month depending on your engine condition the space between the two lines on the dipstick represent one quart\litre. The sunroof should be a fairly easy fix just get some silicone lubricant spray and spray the tracks, my window shudders too haven't fixed it yet doesn' t seem to be a big deal. Gas guage could be a bad sender in the fuel tank, just try to keep it full, it uses alot of gas. For any other problems just use the search tool in the second generation specific form.

As others pointed out, it does take a bit more than a piston engine. Thats why i bought one for my kid. HAs tought him several things on taking care of a car (including the nagging by me to check the oil).

Hope you enjoy the car!
