How safe is DIY Porting ?

hey guys,

While doing my rebuild, I decided to pick up the Judge Ito Intake template and do my Intake ports...

Well the time came to get down and dirty...

this template is pretty agressive!

i'm starting to worry that I might break into the water jacket....

how much meat is there to spare when ur grinding these things?....

I don't have an Exhaust template.. and i have brand new housings.. i'm too afraid to damage them... so i was planning on only smoothing them out inside..

will an Intake only port be useless without the exhaust porting?

Exhaust is not hard to port actually its like butter! Just open the exhaust to the metal sleeve and smooth the edges.

You should have plenty of metal to remove, you can always feel in the water jacket to insure you dont go too far!

^^^ Well said. Just remember to be safe when porting. You can damage your eyes faster than you can imagine if you dont wear your safety glasses. I dont use templates for the exhaust. Like mentioned above I like to use the exhaust sleeve as a guide.

and the safety margins....

porting

You should try to find some scrap end plates and do some practice porting on those... But that templete dosn't seem to extreme. I wouldn't be to worried about going into water jackets, just don't go to deep and go for a smooth transition... Thats what i think but im relatively knew at this.

smooth transition is the key. those templates look relatively safe. one tip that i would like to suggest is that unless you plan on building several motors or using those templates several more times i would use them as a gaurd on the housing. i would rather screw up the surface of $25 template than a $250 side housing.

the other tip is to use HIGH QUALITY grinding tools. a dremel is great for the "finish" work but it would drive me INSANE to work on port with JUST a dremel. get yourself a quality air powered pencil style grinder with some quality CARBIDE bits. Sharp tools are SAFER tools, both for yourself and the piece you're working on.

oh, and just go for it. you won't hit the water jacket so long as you don't don't go too deep. if you're looking at the housing from the broad face where the rotor spins try not to dig too much out of the "floor" of the port.

Good Luck!

Ray

When grinding the intake ports, I take my thumb and forefinger and feel for the thickness left so I don't get into the water jacket. Very simple to guage thichness that way.

try to contact Judge Ito...or do a little bit of research and try porting without templates. Just don't port wider then the side seal path or port to deeply into the coolant passage. try the other forum (nopistons) for some good pics.
