i can't really see any gears with chips on each tooth, the gears do have a relief cut into them which is what you see in those lines through each gear.
that broken piece i can't for some reason picture what it is from. at any rate the transmission needs to be completely torn apart to repair it or swap in something else.

yuck, yeah i wouldn't even bother going any further on that tranny. looks like 5th is a goner as well likely is the counter.
the debris may have damaged other gears before settling in the pan.
the only tranny i have torn apart for parts is an S5 turbo, which has slightly different 5th gearing.

I'm just relieved that I'm not going crazy.

Congrats and thanks for sharing your experience and solution. Also good job on not being afraid to dive in and take on the project. It's how everyone of the do it yourself types learn to work on their own cars. It will save you tens of thousands of dollars in the future and will also keep you from getting screwed.

Thank you for the kind words. I love working on cars myself and I love learning, so this was actually a pretty cool experience. I would say the worst part of the whole thing was waiting on a transmission and driving 14 hours in my DD to get it There were moments when certain situations got me frustrated but I'm glad I didn't give up and just take it to a "mechanic" and pay $$$$. I hope that this thread can help someone else that has the same problem.
