Help with timing - Is my dizzy one tooth out?
When i turn motor so the yellow (leading) timing mark is lined up with pin on front cover the vane in the dizzy isnt that close to the leading pickup - which is the one facing front of car right? When i turn it clockwise to red (trailing) it lines up a lot closer and also the arrow on the rotor when i put it on points strait to L1 on cap, much closer to pickup and L1 than leading mark.
Pretty sure the vane - pickup, and arrow - L1 should line up on yellow not red???
A friend of mine that built the motor put the dizzy in for me, im just checking its right before startup (which wont be for a while).
At yellow mark;

At red mark;

Im not trying to set the timing yet, just trying to ascertain whether the dizzy has been put in right or not. I havent done it before and to me it looks to be a tooth out but im not sure.
No, its not. Installing the dizzy is one thing, after that you set the timing with the engine running.
You really do need to look over a manual though. There are markings on the dizzy that must be lined up before inserting it into the engine. Plus, the engine must be at "top dead center" when this is done. Do those things correctly using the manual for guidance, and you should be all set. There are links to the online service manuals all over this forum.
Good luck...
