If the car won't start by itself but then starts when jumped...

I have to suspect either the alternator or the battery. What voltage does the alternator put out? Should be something over 12 V when running at like 3K rpm.

Does the battery have 12 V? Are all the cells in the battery wet? It's quite possible that due to a bad battery you have 12 V at the battery but you can't pull enough current through it to start the car.

If it were my car and the alternator/charging system seemed OK, I'd buy a new battery and give that a try.

Regards,
Brian
