headlight question/PROBLEM

I screwed something up, i would REALLY appreciate some input!!

i tore the guts out of where my headlights were and used tinted plexi glass and 4 h3 bulbs to make a headlight conversion. it looks good and worked well, untill tonight when it blew a fuze. i used an extra 80 amp fuze i had laying around just so i could drive around tonight. the oem was a 30 amp.

anyway, only my drivers side was working, and very dim, i wiggled some wires and both sides came on bright again. then smoke.... first from the passenger side, then from the underhood fuze block and thirdly from the relay behind the front bumper.

the way i wired these was just by cutting the pigtail off of the oem headlight plug and then used a butt connector to make into a single wire in and a 2 wire out (one per bulb), for the pos and neg. the third i just cut and taped up with simply because it's only for the high beams.

these bulbs are 12v 55w H3's and i can't seem to come to a conclusion on why they worked one night and then fried on the second. any hints?

The stock fuse was 30A for a reason. Fuses are intentionally the weakest link in the circuit. If you install a fuse that is more than twice the amperage rating as the circuit it was meant to protect, then the fuse is no longer the weakest link. Now what you have to do is find the weakest link. You could possibly have burned a wire or relay or something. You won't be able to see what wire is burned because the sheilding on the outside will look normal.

it's hard to say what's wrong without actually seeing what you did, but i will say this ... trace the wiring and find the short before trying to use the lights again - if worst comes to worst, wire it independently - but don't use the lights with that 80A fuse ... you WILL be sorry!

well, i was able to go to an auto parts store today and gathered my stuff to begine to rewire my lights. i'm upgrading all of the wires to a 12 guage as apposed to my stock, what looks like, 16 guage wire.
i found the problem and have one side already done. because of heat and sharp edges of spade connectors, the neg found the pos wire and melted. but now, all connections are soldered and seperated by not only electrical tape, but wire loom. hopefully this covers every angle. by the way, i'll be sure to post pics, when everything is back together, it's not a million dollar job, but still not horrid.
