general question about porting

i was just reading about porting, and have just found out that porting is basically like changing your cams in a piston engine. my question is.. to port the engine, you just take something like a dremel and cut a hole in the housing right? if you mess up, do you have to like.. buy a new housing? and do you have to take out the engine and disassemble it to even get started?

porting opens up cetain ports by widening them with a dremel, or whatever. For example, a "street port" widens the port to the rotors so a larger air/fuel mix can be taken in. I suggest finding a shop to do it.

Newbies use dremels - damn things take too long. I use an air-powered die grinder with carbide burrs - a lot faster!

Yes, $200-$300 for a new housing from Mazda.

Yes, or you can't get access to the port or see what you're doing...

Don't forget about the benifit of larger valves .

I imagine you *could* do it without completely disassambling it, but I'm sure even the laziest person would find it would be easier to take the rotary out and separate the housings. You would also be hard pressed to clean out all of the metal filings, or even worse, the mineral filings from the grinding tool.
