Is this FC engine dead?

I got my hands on an 86 GXL. Im going to swap the engine from my other fc into it. Today I tried starting the engine in the GXL to see if it works. It just cranked over pretty fast. I checked for spark and fuel. The engine didnt have oil in it (since it came from a junkyard). I put some in before trying to start it. I squirted some ATF into the BIG vacuum hose on the dynamic chamber and its sitting right now. I dont have a compression tester so I cant test it. How can I tell if its low on compression? How can I try to get it running? Sorry for the long post.
