I've got an '84 GLS with a 5spd, Its been sitting for a while before I bought it (about a year) but before hand it still had this problem...

It leaks oil, also after its sat for a while (few hours) when I start it, it lets out a lot of white smoke and that lasts for a few minutes. It also donest care to turnover vary quickly (I'd assume thats the starter as its a brand new battery)

Normally I'd check the Head Gasket, and check the oil for signs of water, Well since the rotary doesnt have cylinders, it sure as hell wouldnt have cylinder heads, and no gasket! So Im not sure what would be causing the white smoke (doesnt appear to be burning coolant, and it has the distinct oil smell to it) Im thinking that the leak is comming in some way from the oil injection system, but as Im not horribly familiar with the car (I've owned it for 3 days now) I cant be certain. Any and all help on this would be appreciated. The car has, best I can tell, 220,000 miles on it, possibly more as the gauge cluster doesnt register anything, but it does light up!

a little bit of smoke on startup is fine
as for the starter turning slowly
thats probly from a bad ground
with that many miles you should look into rebiulding the motor soon

 

yea i think u should check into rebuildin' the motor!! before i went to a 2nd generation rx7, i own an 83 FYI my 83 engine went at 250000 miles. Be very careful with that many miles!!PEACE!!

 

the motor is a sandwich. there are water seals in between and one of these is allowing water to pass into the combustion chamber. you will need to rebuild. drive it till it dies or go ahead and rebuild is your choice but that is the only way to fix it.

 

Why don't you save the money and have it rebuilt before it's too late.You would save money in the long run if you have it rebuilt,plus you could have the engine ported and get some good horspower gains.

 

I have heard of guys who had water in there oil and the injector sparys it in to the chamber creating lots of smoke on start up. No matter what it is sounds like a leaky chamber. Some times over night when cold the chamber shrinks. Cause metel does that. water starts to leak in the chamber. in the morning you start up your car and smoke bellows out like nobodies business. From far above it looks like a down airplane. Well as the engine warms up the leak areas seal and the engine runs like it never had a problem.

BTW, most oil leaks are related to the oil cooler and crush gaskets.
