engine building...any DIYs?
Has anyone (re)built their own engine? My 93 has 113,000 miles on and I've accepted the fact that I will, one day, blow my engine. I just sent my turbos out to get BNR rebuilds, so I think the engine might not be far behind. Assuming I move into a new place with a bigger garage this fall, space should not be a problem (it is currently!) I think that I would like maybe a street port and a basic rebuild, nothing monstrous. I own the basic hand tools, and I have access to most any machinist's tools (calipers, gauges, gear pullers, etc) through work. So, my question is, how difficult is it to rebuild an engine? And how much would I be able to trust my engine if I did the rebuild as opposed to Pineapple or any other builder? (I am mechanically inclined.) My car is going to be on jackstands for the winter anyway, plus I am excited about everything that I could learn about my car. I would also be able to say that I rebuilt the engine myself.
Any info would be helpful. TIA.

For the overhaul use the video from rotaryaviation.
On their website you will also find the engine remove and replace vid.
For all the parts you are going to need for the overhaul go here.(also rotaryaviation)
If you finally decide to do it take pics from every step and post on the forum.... Also try the search of the forum for similar questions. I am sure you will find some.
Best of luck....

Yeah I already know about all the vids. I know Atkins sells vids and rebuild kits as well. And its much cheaper to buy a rebuild kit and video for $300-$500 (I think thats how much it was) than to pay somebody $2000-$3000 to rebuild an engine. The only part that really scares me is the porting, as it is really more of an art than a science. (My understanding, anyways.) Might be beneficial to do the rebuild myself and have somebody else do the port job, perhaps?
you can definitely have someone else port the housings for you, especially if you don't have old housings to practice on for yourself. chances are you'd have to send them out to get them lathed anyway, so why not?
then just assemble the engine yourself when you get everything back.
