Differential side bearing preload?

I'm reassembling a 1st gen limited slip diff and I have a question about the differential side bearing preload. The manual says to use a micrometer to measure the bearing carrier 'ear' dimension, when the measurement is between 7.300 and 7.303 inches the preload is correct. Only problem is, no one in my immediate circle of enemies has a 7 to 8 inch micrometer. So, is there a torque spec that can be used for this?
