Well, I'm finally getting a 'thud' (sounds much deeper than a clunk, and I had a clunk before) from the back of the car. I suspect its the famous differential mount. Anybody replace theirs with a peice of metal? I really don't feal like giving Mazda $140 when my dad is a machinest and can make something! I would like dimesions for the mount if anyone has them!(or at least a picture of one!) Thanks in advance!

Oh yeah, this is an '88 Turbo II if it makes any difference!

 

Have your dad make one! Take the old one off and remove whats left of the rubber, then make a metal spacer block and bolt it back on with new bolts. Either that or you can weld it on......but it transmitts noise and vibration pretty bad that way.

The other option is to get the competition mounts, but I think they are even more $$ I am going to have to do something on my 87 TII before long, so let me know what you do to yours!

yeah go with solid mounts. every T2 ibe seen has or has had problems with their diff mounts. if your dad is a machinist then definitley get him to make some for you. i believe there are four of them in all. and they take a lot of work to get out sp be prepared to work. solid metal mounts will make noise and be a little harsher on the ride quality bcause there isnt any rubber on them to absorb the road noise and bumps like the factory ones have, but you dont have to replace solid ones either so it kinda evens out. what i would do is take them out and have your dad make solid metal copies of each one and then reinstall them. it will be better in the long-run frim a performace standpoint

We got the mount off(what a bitch!) and tomarrow he's going to get a peice of metal for it. I'll take a few pics of the finished job...
