I'm working on a 87 RX7, and for some reason it won't rev, it will start, but just won't rev up! and when you floor it, it just smells like gas! is this a common problem? and any idea what it is?

check your coils

 

check the timing. I thought I had the marks on my CAS lined up, but when I installed it, the bevel gear that it meshes with caused it to rotate and throw off the timing cause its a straight gear meshing with a bevel gear. I couldn't get my car to rev cause the timing was way off. It would idle and nothing else. I took the cover off the CAS and when I installed it, I could see the insides rotating. Thats how I figured it out.
