can't start new engine in '89 TII

hey i just installed a rebuilt engine from mazda in my rx7 and got it to run barely and it ran rough because it hasn't been started in a few years, drove it around the block. then had trouble starting it. the starter is fine, turns over fine, all the connections are fine, only thing loose is a boost hose for the pressure sensor but that shouldn't be the reason it won't start. when it cranks sometimes its able to put out some white smoke, but all the seals are fine and brand new put on professionally. any advice? i had also put a higher flow fuel pump in: walboro 255. all i can think of is injectors problems? ECU? or possibly a bad wiring connection in the harness? let me know what you think!

Sounds like the engine is flooded. You said you got the engine rebuilt from Mazda, correct? If so you should have new rotor housings. In that case it should start very easy. Try to unflood the engine, then start it.
To unflood floor it, crank it over for a few seconds (max of 10-15 seconds..you don't want to overheat the starter). When you hear it start to sputter like it is about to start get ready to let off the gas so you don't over rev it, especially being a brand new engine. If that does not work pull the egi fuse and crank it over for 10 seconds or so with it floored, put the fuse back in and see if it will start.

Also, fix that boost line, you want everything connected the way it should be before you try to troubleshoot something.

Good luck, let me know how it goes.
