I never have, but @ 15 years ago, a fellow from whom I purchased a '91 TII rolling shell, purchased the
car in Texas and had an inspection done before purchase. In fact, he had a Mazda dealer inspected the car
before purchase, worked out fine, he got the drive train and I got the rest.
Get an independent inspection and should be fine, but got to add inspection fee and shipping costs to the
purchase price.

Back in 2004 I bought a 1977 REPU on eBay. The truck was located in Utah and I live near Kansas City. On December 30 I flew out to Utah to drive it back hone after being reassured that it ran good. When I got there that the truck ran but the defroster didn't. The truck was still a good buy so I hired a transport truck to deliver it home and the seller split the cost with me. It was a headache because I had to spend a day cooped up in a hotel room to fly out on January 2nd on my dime. I probably spent an extra $1000 because I could not drive it home.

I still have the truck but found out after I got it home the oil seals where bad. Would I do it again? Probably not. Put the cost of the transport and inspection into the value of a local car you can inspect yourself but be wiling to drive a few hours from home to do some shopping. You'll probably spend more time doing it this way.

I've bought 2 cars out of state, the FD from NC and my daily from TX. The FD I flew out to inspect it, had a transport ready to pick up the car while I flew back to Chicago. The daily I bought it unseen, just went by pictures and seller's word, it worked out ok but I wouldn't recommend doing that for an FD unless you really trust the seller.
