Blown Engine? Please Help, also posted in General discussion
I honestly don't know what to look for in a blown engine or the warning signs behind it. I have searched for my particular problem so I am sorry if this is a repeated question.
I have a 94 RX-7 with 99 spec twin turbos, a RX-7 store street ported engine. And a rebuild from when I bought the car about 6 to 7 thousand miles ago? Tonight I changed the oil, Castrol GTX 20w-50 (same oil Ive been using) its been running awesome with no problems until now. Apexi Power FC and Commander, 1300 CC secondary injectors, 850 CC Primaries. All cooling upgrades. But back to whats going on. I changed the oil and then took it out to drive it and wasnt hitting boost or anything. But around 3500 rpms it would start billowing black smoke? It smelled like **** and I dont really know what it was. Help would be great, I dont notice any difference in sound or feel of the car but I have also not hit boost yet for fear of something being wrong? Please Please help!

I may not be a fuel whiz, but isn't 1300cc a little extreme for your setup? Black smoke is fuel, but I'd make sure it's black and not a grayish blue.
I don't know if you are implying that it is related to you changing your oil or what, but did it start right after the oil change? In that case you could've just over-filled it, common mistake. Let your 7 cool down for at least 30 min on completely LEVEL ground and then go check your oil level to be sure it's not anywhere above full.

if it isnt the oil level what might it be? And if it is the oil level do I just drain it and start again? and if it is overfilled it takes 5 quarts if I am not mistaken? I know that is a stupid question but Id rather double check instead of have this happen you know? But I will check the oil level right now and get back to you. Thanks.
Sounds overfilled lol. I'm pretty sure the capacity in the REW is around 4 1/2 quarts, R1 models will be slightly more of course. If you overfilled, no worries. Just back off the drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan until a steady but small stream starts to come out, don't remove the plug completely. Let the oil trickle out for about 15-20 seconds, tighten back down, recheck your level with the jack/jackstands removed of course, to make the engine level for an accurate reading.
I will check and make sure. We did put in 5 quarts. I will not be able to do that tonight but I will do it tomorrow after work. Thank you for your advice and I will let you know how it turns out. But the friend of mine that was following me said it smelled like oil. But looked black. It was at night though? Do you know if there could be any other problems, and I havent had any problems with running very rich and getting black smoke?
I have a question. If for some reason it is not the oil? I mean if it was over filled wouldnt it be doing it at any rpm? I honestly dont know. I am just asking to see if there is any explanation for that?
I'm pretty much set on it being overfilled, but how many miles on your 99+ spec turbos? Do they boost properly etc. etc.?
It might be your turbos but I'm doubting it, once my turbos went out(without warning) I could smoke screen a whole city block if I wanted to.

I was browsing through oil threads when I came upon this, you might find ease of mind in the last sentence.

Oil changing 101 is to slightly underfill, then top off after you start the car, let it rest and then see what it needs.
We have had 2 people in the last month drain an FD and put 5+ quarts back in it.

but it would billow out of your tail pipe? I didn't know the effects would be so drastic? But that is very good to know. How much oil do you usually put in and while on the subject what brand of oil do you use and the weight and how does it work for you?
Havoline 20-50 non-syn in the summer, 10-30 in the winter. I get a little first startup smoke in the mornings but that is normal, no smoke under boost.
My '93 has a single oil cooler and I remember putting about 4.25 quarts in to bring it right on the Full mark on the dipstick.
I think I had overfilled once about a year ago and my symptoms were almost exactly like yours.

I drained some oil and checked. Its still doing it. It is a whitish smoke. I am not sure if its coolant or oil? But it doesnt blow smoke under boost under 3500 rpm but as soon as I hit 3500 tons and tons of whitish smoke. I was also told it might be the map sensor, it doesnt look disconnected? I am not sure.
