Bare essentials to take apart and put back together

Hi, I have a cosmo 4 port 13b and was wondering what I need to take apart the motor to port and polish it, gasket and seal wise. Do I need a full rebuild kit? Or do I just need gaskets? springs? what? I've never taken apart a rotary before but I have a freshly rebuilt 13b 4-port sitting in my garage that I'd like to port.

Generally, if it's a used motor, you'll want to do a complete rebuild. Atkins sells nice kits on ebay; I'd buy their rotor kit (apex seals, all new springs minus OCRs, corner plugs, oil bypass "plug" and viton oil control ring rubbers), and then talk to them about getting the proper gasket kit.

Basically, never tear a motor apart unless you have a gasket kit on hand. Bare minimum required is 4 outter water jacket o-rings, 4 inner water jacket o-rings, and all the seals on the torshen bolts.

to port and polish the intake/ehxaust, you'll need some carbide cutting bits of various sizes/shapes, a die-grinder, an air compressor, and a lot of patience. You can do it with a dremel and a flex-shaft, but expect each housing to take around 2 hours to do.

A good suggestion is to get a shop manual (Haynes available at any auto parts store) and thoroughly read the engine teardown/assembly section. It will give you a fairly good idea what you're in for.

The motor was just rebuilt, and was never ran. So I should just need a gasket set, 4 outer water jacket o-rings, 4 inner water jacket o-rings, and seals on the torshen bolts?

That will do it, assuming the little o-rings around the dowel-pins are still good (they generally are still "usable" after even 30,000 miles)

you might want to replace you're front and rear main seals as well.
