i have searhed several times over the last couple years regarding detonation and i have never managed to find a video clip or sound clip of what it actually sounds like?

ive got an 87 NA an an 85 12A SP both iwthout emissions and both make the fabled "marbles in a tin can" sound at idle, my narrow band AFR guage in the fc reads rich, i havent had the chance to install wideband yet. i have checked the timing on both numerous times and far as i can tell they are bang on .. ive replaced wires, plugs, fuel filters, and nothing i do seems to have much effect. both cars have RB headers and i hear they make a particular sound but i dont know what sound that is either so if anyone can aim me at a vid clip of a rotary detonating, and if possible what an rb header should sound like id appreciate it.

it seems unlikely from what i read that it is detonation because its consistant, constant and both cars pull fine and havent grenaded the engines yet, at the same time i love my cars an paranoia wont let me leave it alone

oh i thought you wanted to see a video of one blowing up..

i don't think you'll get to much sound after it's blown


have you checked your compression..

do a compression test on both...cars

 

well .. that was sick.. but informative. i assume the change in pitch a half second before it grenaded was the detonation, but thats a lil too extreme for the comparison im tryin to make. the closest i could find surfin utube was

right at the beginning when he first starts the engine u can hear a rattly plinking sound that seems sort of separate from the exhaust note. say at 13 seconds to 17 secods in is the most noticeable in the video.. and its very faint but it sounds like someone softly clangin two pieces of metal together. thats the sound im trying to diagnose. my FC isnt too bad, i seemed to have tamed it down, but my SP 12A goes at it pretty hard and id hate to kill it off out of ignorance.

You can't "hear" the detonation, but you can hear it running on one rotor.

 

I've seen that vid a bunch and i think that was a clutch/flywheel letting go, not the motor.

 

yeah one rotors a sick puppy, drove across town on one rotor before.. still passed people on the highway but made a hell of a lot of noise doin it.

but we have digressed, i want to hear an engine actively pinging or barring that id like to know what the tinkling noise is if it isnt detonation. ill try an borrow a video camera an get vid of my own nasty noise as reference
