After 5.5RPM Full Throttle Bogs Down

'84 Non-Turb 5 Speed

Question

When I am in N or any other gear if I floor it after it passes 5500RPM it will bog down and jerk real bad until I let off. I can get it up to 7500RPM as long as I don't floor it and play with the throttle. I thought i might have been something with the mixure so I played with it a bit. I got 3 1/2 turns to the lean (I think couter clockwise is leaning, correct me if I am wrong) and it does get better, but I just want to see if it might be something else.

Other than that the car runs fine now that I have cleaned up the carb, replaced basic parts (fuel filter, air filter, changed oil (was coming out in chunks), sparkplugs.

Thanks for the help!!

What came with the car I assume. I bought it about a month ago so I'm not sure what the other guy has done to it. In the condition I got it in I don't think it changed or replaced anything.

well, you probably need to check what you've got. the stock fuel pump is not adequate and can be a possible cause of what you describe.

what kind of carbie are you running?

also, i'm a bit concerned about the "chunks" thing you referred to when you changed your oil.

The carb is stock too, i'll take a look at the fuel pump and replace it if needed and see what that is.

When I changed the oil it came out almost like sour milk, but before hand when I checked the dip stick it looked fine. I took of the oil pan and scrapped off good half inch of sour oil if you could call it that and flushed the system with clean oil. I checked all the seals and what not and everything looked fine. It might have been that the oil pan was never cleaned, if the guy before be changed his own oil I don't know.

After I did that tough the car ran a lot smoother and did sound better :-)

for the oil-thing (sour milk, creamy whitish???) sounds like the case was not being vented adequately. either that or water/antifreeze is getting into your oil. one's not so bad, the other may mean a rebuild is on your horizon.

on the other issue, you've got me stumped on one detail. you need to identify what carbie you've got, because there was no stock 13B carb in 1984. if you have an SE they came fuel injected. the only way a carbie is on it, is if someone put it there. can you post some pics of your setup?

HAHA OK I screwed up one detail - its an 82 not 84 my bad (eek). The oil isn't coming out white LOL i was using the sour milk as a discription of its consistancy, not color.

well, if you haven't mucked with the distributor at all, then i'd probably hold the pump suspect.

i replaced the distriputer rotor and cap, but havn't made any adjustments to timing or anything.

I'll give the fuel pump a try and let you know what comes of it.

Figured out why it was bogging out. The guy I guess who had it before me broke the choke cable and screwed with the tuning (mixture and throttle) so it would start. I realized that after I had it tuned up and no longer bogging down. When I went to start it in the morning it would start. I put the mixture back and it cranked right up.
