how much do i put in? how do i know ive put in enough?

Should take about 2 gallons. Open the air bleeder, fill. Idle the engine to let it work the air out with the top cap open, and fill as it goes down.

For the next few times, check the level before you go anywhere. It will push air out from various places. When it's working properly, there should be no air in the system at all.
