Hey everyone.....i got a real simple question...im not sure if i can get a simple answer....I now drive a 95 maxima 5 spd with all the bolt on mods and even a stillen supercharger, but im sick of tring to get to a point where other cars are already at.... I have always loved the rx-7 TT's...since as long as i remember...question is..with the rotary engine and all...EXACTLY HOW RELIABLE ARE THESE CARS?????? I dont know too much about rotary engines and who better to ask then the people who have them! What should I expect as far as maintanence, reliability, and even price! Im interested in the 3rd generation..which i think is the 93 and up body style. I would LOVE to get the newer Supras but they are just to damn much.....IF YOU GUYS COULD LET ME KNOW WHATS UP, THAT WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATIVE....IM GETTING A CAR WITHIN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS, AND IF THE RX7 IS WHAT I THINK IT IS...HOPEFULLT I WILL SEE YOU GUYS HERE AGAIN..THANKS IN ADVANCE EVERYONE!!

Original engines last about 60,000 miles as a consensus.&nbsp Big money to rebuild them, if they are salvagable.

Cooling is a problem with those things.

Supras too much? Heh. The upkeep alone on a poorly maintained FD will surely offset any savings in purchase price. Be careful before you buy. Don't jump in at the first FD you see.

If you take care of the f'n car it'll run well...I'd say it can run strong up to 100k miles. After that you probably wouldn't want a sports car with that much mileage, but as far as 60k goes it's the owners that blow motors, motors don't blow themselves

 

Sorry, but that consensus was reached by the average of the FD owners on the "big list."&nbsp That's a pretty large group of FD drivers all in one place.&nbsp Unless you have conclusive proof otherwise, the stories of blown motors tells all...

If your concern is price, pass on the rx7. You'll be needing a new engine by around 100k (if not before), plus if you want to mod your car, rx7's aren't cheap...new computer is >=$1k, IC is >=$1k, coilovers are ~$2500, new turbos are ~$3k...all told, you'll spend a lot of money on the car. If you're passionate about your cars and don't mind spending the money, RX-7's are for you. If not, and you just want something to drive hard and not worry about, get a Supra.

 

About moding, It cost just the same to mod a Supra with a RX7. I have test driven a Supra when it first came out, to me it is abit too big, looks too big and ugly. The RX7 looks way better also the inside the RX7 have everything nicely in place. About buying a Supra VS RX7 it is purely you your liking. Their performance are very simular and handling the RX7 may have an advantage. It is reliable if you treate it carefully, the rotary engine doesn't take much abuse like the pistons. You be the judge.

The problem is with the 93-up twin turbo RX-7 is you cannot mod the intake and exhaust and keep the same safe air/fuel ratio. This is due to the MAP sensor not able to pick up the increase air flow to maintain the appropriate fuel requirements.

The first mod should be to keep the engine cool. This should prevent a lot of the blown out coolant seals and broken apex seals.
