3rd Gen - How can I get by w/o upgraded ECU?

I'm going to be running dp, mp, and borla cat back and have an open intake I might swap in as well.

Can I just run a very large pill/no pill in wastegate line to keep me running safe until i can
afford to upgrade ecu? Anything else i can do?

safe is a very relative term...you could do it, but not very safe, especially if you have a lead foot like most of us do. Best advice is to get the upgraded ecu...and even then you are only "safer"....the rotary is a fickle engine...

you could maybe use a Apex s-afc to control air/fuel mixture

i had overboosting problems with just K&N filter, gutted precat, catback -up to 14lbs in cold weather. i pulled the pill entirely to be safe till i had the funds for an ecu. runs about 7lbs like that...still i don't think thats a great solution or anything.

Well, this isn't an upgraded ECU per se, but it's a piggyback. Go with the Apexi Power FC and commander. They'll allow you to tune your engine a bit so it's safer. Be aware that you may need to worry about boost creep etc, and as I understand it the best solution for that is ported wastegates. I think the PFC can only handle up to 17psi (or maybe 14, i forget), so if you go above that, you'll need to think about something else to keep boost down or you'll pop that motor.

The cheapest safest way to get by is a used Pettit ecu with the unlimited chip. You can prob find one for $500 is you shop around.

The Apexi Power FC is not a piggy back, it is a standalone computer that replaces the stock ecu. If you plan on modding further and have access to a dyno for tuning when needed get a Power FC but it will cost ya about $1300. When the new AEM hits the market alot of people will probably be selling thier Power FC so you could prob get a used one for about $900.

Here is the way it goes.....

dont go over 10-11psi with the stock ecu
if you upgraded you ecu dont go over 12-13psi with the stock IC
After you upgrade the IC dont go over 13-14psi with the stock fuel syst
When you get a new pump and injectors you'll be good up to the turbos max which is about 16psi

Thats the upgrade path as far is boost limits are concerned. If you dont follow them you WILL blow your motor

you should leave the main cat in. we used to call a midpipe an "apex seal removal tool" because thats what it does
