Hi guys,
I have searched all over this forum and some help from some of the members here would be great. Recently my FD has turned into a mobile Sauna. I know the the freon has been leaking out of my compressor very slowly because I can see the oil (the oil mixed with the freon) leaking out all over the compressor.
So I have been on the search for a replacement compressor. I have a 94 FD (the 191'st of the model year), this FD still uses the R -12 freon. Calling around I have been told there are two models available for the FD one that has a switch built into it and one that does not. I did some research and on the iluvmyrx7 site found some A/C material for 93 RX-7.

This picture is from the shop manual and it shows the pressure switch.





Then I went out to my car and checked, I didn't see the pressure switch near the dryer.




So how does it look on your cars? Do you agree with me in thinking that I have the compressor with the switch built into it?

If you are replacing your receiver dryer (your picture), then you should call Mazda parts dealer to find the correct AC parts (port installed or Japan installed) by giving your VIN number.

I'm not sure if the AC compressor is a difference between port installed and Japan installed.

there is a big price differnce. i think the one that was installed in japan is like $1300 where as the port installed compressor is like $350

 

I own a '93. My drier has the window eye on top of the unit and the drier is aluminum in color. There is a wire and connector tied to one of the aluminum tubes, but I can't see what it's for. It looks like the diagram you posted, not like your picture.

My 94 Base has the switch like your part diagram. I hope that helps. BTW, my 94 was built in 9/92 so it's probably an early 94 model.

 

Actually I am replacing the compressor, but the differences exist where the pressure switch is built on to the compressor where as the others are not. The compressor that does NOT have the switch built on to it has some wires, and a connector near the dryer unit. As in the sketch above. And I THINK... that since my dryer in the picture above does not have that connector then I have the compressor with the switch built in to it. But I need some verification.

That dryer is for the port installed A/C system. My car has the same system. I have a high pressure switch under the battery, I don't know if I have a switch on the compressor or not...kinda hard to see down there.

The only switch built into the compressor that I am aware of is an overheat switch, which cuts current to the clutch if things get really hot.

I looked in the '93 Service Highlights manual, the '93 & '94 Body Electrical Troubleshooting manual, and the '93 & '94 wiring diagrams, and didn't find anything to imply that the switch was moved, or that the connector on the compressor is different, although the Service Highlights manual was the only one that made mention of the overheat switch on the compressor.

 

It looks like I'm just going to have to take the compressor off. And just take it to the A/C shop to get a replacement. I looked at the BODY A pdf file and it makes mention of two compressors the MENA and the DENSON, the guys at the dealership looked up my VIN and said that it was a DENSON so we will just have to see what happens.

 

That drier is the expensive one; only place I have located it was a dealer and I think it was about $130. The switch you are looking for is in one of the hard lines to the drier. To see it you have to remove the battery and tray, then you'll spot it right away hiding underneath one of the lines. Can't miss it once you have the battery tray out.

I just converted my system to 134a recently, PM me if you have some questions.

 

You're in Texas, with a dark color car, like mine. How does your A/C perform converted? What did they change for the conversion, if anything?

Denso is the Japan installed.
Mana is port installed (cheaper).

 

94 Production should have started in 7/93 (or later)
a 9/92 build date would indicate a 93 model.
now my 93 is an EARLY car with a 2/92 build date and serial #01564
