Question NEED XPERT HELP!! Shifting into any gear causes a rough idle!

Hi. I need a reponse to this post please!!!

1993 Mazda RX-7 w/ 69696miles Twin Turbo Touring

When I shift into any gear the motor starts to shudder and idle roughly. It idles just fine in neutral. Nothing else is wrong with the car.

Please help!! I have no clue where to start looking for a problem.

...AND YES I DID SEARCH THE ARCHIVES!!!

dont quote me on this but i also heard that a rough idle could be cause by a bad thermoswitch. i get the same idle that you are talking about and i am going to try the clutch sensor. i will also do the miata thermoswitch at the same time. well one at a time to see if i can get the shaking to go away.

This should have shown up in the search under idle. Clutch switch is first to check - if ok. When you put the car in 1st, or 2nd or in neutral other switches in the transmission send signals to the ECU which can cause the idle to change IF the idle system is not calibrated correctly. All sorts of people give the wrong advice in adjusting the idle. YOU DON'T JUST ADJUST THE SCREW NEAR THE THROTTLE ACTUATOR! The procedure in the manual is the only way to adjust, as a matter of fact, doing the above can cause all sorts of idle problems. The manual section F-16 & 17 describes the correct procedure. If you have already changed your Throttle screw near the throttle actuator - back it off to the paint mark then start the adjust procedure. Don't forget the jumper in the diagnostic connector and all electricals off (fans, AC etc) for the jumper use a straightened paperclip between the "TEN" and "GND" terminals. Then follow the procedure.

The procedure corrected the same thing as you have - but check the clutch switch first but the idle should not change between gear and neutral.

I juts spoke to Will at C2 in Oakland(RX7 Mechanic) and he said that a rough idle could mean that an APEX seal could be going.

idle bounces when low=bad apex seal
idle smooth but at 1100= bad apex seal, rpm's high because ecu compensates for it.
